Progressive Overload |
The principle of progressive overload means that in order for the athlete to improve, they must continuously put effort and work harder than before every time, allowing the body to adjust. Taking such actions will bring about the desired changes, and will improve cardiovascular fitness, allowing them to be able to physically go beyond their previous limit. If the training does not push the athlete to his/her limits, there will be minimal improvement.
Tips on applying the overload principle:

Specificity |
Specificity in training means refers to the changes the body is having in response to it. This means that when an athlete is training for a particular sport, the body will get used to the requirements and hence get better at performing tasks. When progressively overload occurs in training, the body being able to withstand the demands is specificity.
Specificity for learning sport skills involves training for skills that is closely related to the athletes sport instead of practising and perfecting any random skills which may not even be useful for the athlete. Specifically learning skills needs allows them to quickly adapt to different conditions. |
